Rhythmic energy so well describes the bulk of Hart Morris' work and it stands true in this original composition commissioned for the State Festival 2000 of Arkansas. Most fans of Hart Morris spiritual arrangements know they're fun, but also lots of work of rhythms and accidental changes. This arrangement, though certainly not simple, is nevertheless more accessible than others of Mr. Morris.

The melody of this stately hymn tune is found in varying registers and marked with various techniques. A fanfare introduction is followed by a march-like section using mallets and march rhythm.

Rocking Carol

"Still, Still, Still", a Czech carol is combined with the title Austrian carol in this gentle setting, which calls for 12 handchimes in the 2-octave range. A rocking accompaniment pattern in the upper register opens the work and leads to the first statement of the tune scored for the chimes. After a key change the texture grows stronger, but soon returns to a tender dynamic and ending.

The favorite spiritual is here set with a tempo marking of 100-110 on the quarter-note and thus achieving the joyful nature inherent in the music.
